Breed Info
Andalusians

One of the oldest breeds of horse, the Andalusian, is known for its beauty, athletic ability and intelligence. Used throughout history in all styles of riding, from war horses of the ancient Greeks and Romans, to mounts of royalty, to dressage and bullfighting, the Andalusian is extremely versatile.
The classical riding academy, popular during the Renaissance, used these horses for high level dressage because of their natural agility, balance and trainability. The Andalusian also influenced other breeds popular in the dressage and sport horse world, including the Lipizzan, Lusitano and many different European Warmbloods.
Most Andalusians average 15.2 to 16.2 hands high. The most common color is gray, with an occasional bay, black, or chestnut. They have beautiful long, flowing manes and tails, and are known for their powerful, elegant leg action which makes them very suitable for the sport of dressage. Andalusians also compete in show jumping, driving, endurance and are used for bullfighting.
The beauty of the Andalusian has been featured in numerous films, “Shadowfax” in the Lord of the Rings trilogy was played by two Andalusians, the unicorn in the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, was an Andalusian, and Mel Gibson rode an Andalusian in the movie, Braveheart.
