Akhal-Teke Association of America
From warfare mounts of the Central Asian nomadic peoples, to a coveted treasure noted by Chinese Emperors, Alexander the Great, Marco Polo, and other great figures, to key foundational blood for the Thoroughbred horse, to favored Russian and Turkmen calvary mounts, and even to Olympic Gold… the Akhal-Teke horse has proven it can do it all.
With a reputation for speed and endurance, intelligence, and a body type compared to that of a cheetah or greyhound, the Akhal-Teke is very versatile for many disciplines. They are also known for their distinctive metallic sheen. The shiny coat of the breed led to their nickname, "Golden Horses".
As for character it is a breed of great courage, loyalty and sensitivity. Akhal Tekes bond strongly with their riders and often make loyal and hard-working equine partners for experienced owners.
The Akhal Teke horse is believed to be one of the oldest surviving and purest of horse breeds, having been bred for centuries by the Teke tribe in the Akhal oasis in the Karakum desert of Turkmenistan. The breed has undergone several name changes, but is still known as “the celestial horse” or “the jewel of Turkmenistan”.
The Turkmen people decorated their horses with love, and made extravagant decorations for them. These were called “alagayysh” and were highly appreciated. The harnesses were made of gold, silver, and bronze and were decorated with precious stones.
