DESCRIPTION:
As a volunteer in Stallion Avenue, you may be asked to help with a variety of tasks, such as helping with set-up, assisting the coordinator with owner check-in, and/or providing owners with the necessary materials to participate in Midwest Horse Fair events throughout the weekend. You may also need to answer questions, direct owners to their stalls, and help where needed. The Stallion Avenue Coordinator will guide your efforts and provide instructions.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Please arrive 15 minutes early each day to check in with the Volunteer Coordinator who is located in the Welcome Center, at the front of Pavilion Two. This will allow you a few minutes to ask any questions you may have, receive updates that need to be relayed to you, and arrive on time at your work location to relieve the volunteer working the prior shift.
- You will then report to the Stallion Avenue Coordinator for further instructions.
- For those interested in purchasing snacks or meals, there is a Food Court located between the Coliseum and Nutrena Arena, as well as food vendors in Exhibition Hall, Coliseum, and front of the Pavilions.
- We recommend that you store personal items in your vehicle, as there are no secured areas to secure your valuables (purse, backpack, purchases etc.).
DUTIES:
- Please be courteous and friendly. Midwest Horse Fair depends on your good attitude and kind demeanor to make the weekend a success. If a problem arises, please be tactful and refer the issue to the Stallion Avenue Coordinator
- Dress appropriately for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes (required)
- Stay alert at all times and pay attention to your surroundings in case a problem arises and action is required. We politely ask that you limit your cell phone usage during your shift
- Each shift will last 3 hours. In exchange for working three 3-hour shifts throughout weekend, volunteers can earn a free 3-day wristband (value $45)
- Help distribute shavings to stalls
- Help with laying out arena mats
- Assist with hanging signage
- Help to decorate Stallion Avenue Presentation Arena
- Help direct the flow of traffic in and around Stallion Avenue
- Greet the owners and make them feel welcomed to Stallion Avenue and the Midwest Horse Fair
- Answer general questions about Stallion Avenue and the Midwest Horse Fair (directions, schedule, events, etc.)
- Check in owners and supply them with any necessary materials
- Direct any questions to the Stallion Avenue Coordinator if you don’t know how to answer
- Please do not leave until the next person arrives to take your place or without consulting the Stallion Avenue coordinator
- Other duties may be assigned as needed
- Please be advised that assigned jobs may change as needed at any time per the discretion of Midwest Horse Fair
For safety & liability reasons, this job is best suited for those who:
- Enjoy interacting with the public
- Are flexible and willing to complete a variety of tasks
- Are able-bodied, capable of lifting up to 40 pounds, and able to stay on your feet throughout the entire shift
- Are familiar with horses and feel comfortable around them
- Can communicate effectively, hear and understand directions clearly, and react quickly
